About Me and My Weight.

by Robert Fahey

On the surface most people would class me as successful, but to be honest this statement covers about everyone if they have a positive mind set.. I am lucky enough to have an average IQ and am average at most things, but I have above average body mass and my weight is way off the scales. I am generally happy with my life, love my family etc, but I don’t seem able to fix my weight problem long-term, no matter how I try, even though I know it would bring health benefits.

In fact the harder I try to fix it the worse the problem gets. This confuses me and frankly defies logic. Surely, I can just eat a bit less and over time lose the excess weight and then I would be fine, but I have tried almost every possible diet and weight loss regime thatexists and have still failed. I have even accumulated a wealth of knowledge about the subject over the past 20 years, but not actually arrived at the solution that works for me. Firstly, I am overweight not because I have a problem with types of food like fish or nuts or vegetables, nor because I don’t exercise . I train 3 to 5 times a week. I don’t have a problem with junk food, in fact quite the opposite, my diet is most of the time very good.

It has something to do with something that I don’t understand or want to recognize or change. So this is my mission, namely, to find, fix and cure my weight problem.

I was born in 1969, and in the UK in those days it was more fashionable to have fat babies, so I was pumped full of baby milk substitute It was generally believed that big babies were healthy babies.

We now know this is not the case and the milk formula provided has little or no essential fatty acids. Children fed on this stuff may have IQ’s around 10 points below children fed on breast milk and I am not sure how much this has changed over the years.

‘Scientific studies have shown that being overweight as a child significantly improves the chance of being obese when you are an adult’. It seems that convenience foods, the invention of the microwave and long periods watching TV, together with the pace of life have all got their part to play in this conundrum.

Take the Microwave

In 1970, the first microwave ovens appeared in the shops. This created the foundation for marketing quick fast food meals at home, which in turn created a demand so that the supermarkets and the food industry needed to produce the 4 minute meal.

To manufacture this food and for it to stay fresh for weeks and then cooked quickly, food manufacturers had to tinker around with the food. Things like stabilizers, emulsifiers and preservatives were put into our food. Most of these things can give you headaches, intestine problems and increase hyperactivity in children. Some affect asthmatics or can even give you cancer

Some countries have banned them but not all.

I believe there is a direct link between the increase in asthma and hyperactivity in children and the prevalence of these substances in our food. The TV program, “Supersize ME”. showed that eating junk food has serious health consequences. However, to be fair eating one or two foods all the time can be bad for you. I assume that a diet of just green beans will leave you vitamin deficient.

Every food has a lack of something. So when dietitians talk of a ‘balanced diet’ they really mean not just a few foods but lots of different types of food.

Do I have a genetic predisposition to acquire weight given the wrong environment? Or is the environment making it impossible to lose weight. Or is it all in my head. Therefore I can reprogram my head? These are some of the relevant and interesting questions I seek answers to and already have found some fascinating insights into the subjects.

Why do we gain weight?

There was a time when my weight went up and up and up after a Rugby injury to 21 stone. As of April 2010 when I reach 19 stone I peak then lose weight again but bottom out at 17 stone. Nothing to be proud of, but I do this automatically.

What if I could automatically be 16, 14 or 12 stone? How could I do this and what worked for the 21 stone to the 19 stone limit? And what prevents the 17 stone limit?

I hope to investigate my punishment and reward systems hardwired into my behavior and undo the damaging behaviors. A computer reboot of my head.

Over many years I have spoken to therapists, health and wellness experts and psychologists as well as the general public about these issues and I believe there is a global interest in finding the solution to achieving optimal health and weight loss if necessary.

For the last few years I have been involved heavily in participating, researching and even investing into actual solutions that work for weight loss, some mildly successful but mostly they did not work for me for long and I have realized that there is no magic bullet.

Why are there 1.7 billion people globally who are overweight or obese and have tried and failed just like me to lose weight? For over 80% of these people there is no reason why they should be obese and there is one common denominator that links us all: call me an optimist, there is an answer.

Join the obesity movement and volunteer to lose weight with me. What I know so far is this that trying to lose weight with groups of similar people works best for providing encouragement and staying on message.

Here is a very simple idea. If 5 or more people do something together they are more likely to succeed. If 5000 people work together do something they can build sky scrapers and Pyramids. Space shuttles and computers and change societies.

Research with 3 people is pretty meaningless. So we just need you to try stuff out. Most of the stuff is free, but if we have to pay we are a charity so we have to pass it on to you. But the good news is we often have great discounts arranged. So I need your help, sign up and try and lose weight with me.
